W5: "The Secret Door in My School Leads to..."

It was a normal school day. My friends and I had some free time after school because it ended earlier than usual. We decided to play a game, hide and seek, while we waited for our parents. Eric was picked as the seeker, and the rest of us had to look for hiding places.

I headed towards the storage room, where few students ever visited. It felt like a great spot to hide. As I went inside, I saw some old furniture and dusty shelves. I found a wooden board against the wall. I moved it aside and was stunned for a while. Behind it was a hidden door! I felt curious, so I turned the handle and stepped inside. A bright light flashed and blinded me. When I opened my eyes, I was no longer at school.

I was in a whole different world.

The old village

Note. The village that I arrived back to.

The place seemed quite old, with simple wooden and stone houses. People who walked past me were clothed in old-fashioned attire and gazed at me as I wore the modern school uniform with my backpack.

I approached a passerby and asked what year it was. The answer shocked me: 1725……. I had unexpectedly travelled back over 300 years!

As I walked through the village, some people looked at me with curiosity, others with suspicion. Suddenly, a group of men grasped my arms. They thought I was a spy or monster. I tried to explain that I was just lost, but they did not listen. They pulled me along, ignoring my struggles.

Just when I believed I was hopeless, a poor voice spoke. “Let her go. She is my granddaughter.” An elderly woman walked forward. The men paused and finally let me go. I had never seen her before, but she seemed kind. She let me follow her back home.

At her tiny house, I asked her why she helped me. She sighed and said I looked like her lost granddaughter, Emily, who was lost three years ago. Her story touched me. I decided to help her find Emily.

Over the next few days, I looked for hints. Using my paper and pencil, I drew Emily’s face according to the elderly woman’s description and posted the drawings around the village. People had never seen anything like this before, but some recognised the girl.

The sketching of a girl's facial features

Note. The sketching that I draw to find Emily.

I followed the hints and found a remote village. There, I saw a girl who looked exactly like the sketch. When I asked her about her background, she looked confused. She had lost her memories after an accident and has been looking for her family ever since.

Although she was apprehensive, she agreed to come with me. When we arrived at the elderly woman’s house, time seemed to pause. The woman’s eyes widened with disbelief before she ran forward to Emily, tears spilling down her face. She hugged the girl tightly. Even though the girl could not remember her past, something deep inside her told her this was her home.

When they reunited, I realised my mission was complete.

With a heavy heart, I returned to where I had first arrived. To my relief, the hidden door was still there. I took one last look at the village before passing through.

The next second, I was back in the storage room. My friends gathered around me, wondering why I was hiding in such an unusual place. When I looked back, the wooden board was once again covering the entrance.

But it was something different. I felt something little on my neck; it was a necklace that the elderly woman gave me……

I smiled and decided to keep this a secret.
